The avocado growers of Calavo Growers might not be a cooperative anymore, but they're still friendly folks. Calavo (a combination of "California" and "avocado") began as a growers' marketing cooperative founded in 1924 in order to transform the exotic hobby crop, avocados, into a culinary staple. And the avocado has become, if not a staple, a regular in US supermarket shopping carts. Calavo procures and processes avocados (one-third of California's entire crop for 2009), tomatoes, and other fresh fruits grown mainly in California but also uses fruit from Chile, Peru, and Mexico. The products are then distributed to retail food outlets, food service operators, and produce wholesalers throughout the world.
