Company Description

Canadian Oil Sands is seeking its fortune in the sands in Alberta that are being exploited by Syncrude Canada. The Syncrude partnership's large oil sands mine and supporting plants produce value-added light, sweet crude oil. The Syncrude Project is the largest single source of oil in Canada and accounts for about 15% of the country's total oil production. With a 37% share, Canadian Oil Sands is the largest shareholder in Syncrude (in which Imperial Oil and Petro-Canada also hold significant minority stakes). In 2009 Canadian Oil Sands reported proved and probable reserves of 1.8 billion barrels of oil equivalent. In 2011 it converted from a trust to a corporation for better shareholder returns.
