Overview
Some joke "defense intelligence" is an oxymoron, but the federal agency in charge of producing and managing foreign military intelligence isn't laughing. The Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) is a Department of Defense combat support agency that gathers and provides military intelligence to war fighters, defense policymakers, and force planners in the DoD and the intelligence community. Established in 1961, the DIA operates offices at both the Pentagon and the Defense Intelligence Analysis Center in Washington, DC, the Armed Forces Medical Intelligence Center in Frederick, Maryland, and the Missile and Space Intelligence Center in Huntsville, Alabama. The agency has 16,500 civilian and military employees.
